Releasing the Spikenard of Your Soul

You may feel like a cactus in a desert canyon keeping people away from your heart with needles. Let your cactus heart flower, just believe it's your season.

Spikenard is precious, valuable, cherished, treasured and very costly.
Your soul is irreplaceable; tender, precious, esteemed and loved.
You are a pearl who was purchased at a great cost.

When the preciousness of your soul is leaked through brokenness, the Repairer of broken walls will heal you. You will become like a well watered garden whose spring never runs dry. You were created  to do more than just live a leaky life. You have been designed to live like a river of free flowing love that breaks through the damns of brokenness.

Brokenness is part of a regenerating design that brings a greater strength than you could ever imagine. Bitterness is a disease that takes root in the brackishness of a stagnant soul - a lifeless, unmoving pond of self pity. Embracing brokenness will help you resuscitate a soul bereft of compassion.

There is no canyon of despair where God cannot create awe inspiring love.

If you are struggling, imagine a cocoon where you emerge with wings of freedom.
If life is hard, imagine polishing the brilliance of your diamond like future.
If somebody is irritating you, imagine yourself as an oyster creating a pearl of great price.
If you need to forgive yourself, imagine yourself as a tree letting your leaves fall and new buds appearing in a new spring of your life.
If you feel lonely, imagine being the seed just released from the Farmers hand into the broken soil. Soon you will burst forth into the sunshine as a new sprout.

Will you pour out something valuable on somebody today?
Will you pour your time, talents or treasures
when the world considers your actions wasteful?
When you pour out your soul on somebody,
don't wait for them to be grateful or
pour back into you,
just keep pouring.

Even Niagara Falls flows on a cold, dark winters night.

The source of the precious spikenard in your soul
is unlimited and unfathomable.
The river of compassion needs to flow
through you to keep love moving.

God is the irrepressible refiller of your soul.
His cup of love never runs dry.

Fill someone's cup of suffering with love,
you will flow in rivers of freedom, just let go.

The fragrance of the spikenard in your soul will
smell like a bouquet of love to the broken soul.

A snow heart pushes it's way up through the frozen ground of a bleak midwinter. Your spring is just around the corner.

Mark 14:3-9
The Message

3-5 Jesus was at Bethany, a guest of Simon the Leper. While he was eating dinner, a woman came up carrying a bottle of very expensive perfume. Opening the bottle, she poured it on his head. Some of the guests became furious among themselves. “That’s criminal! A sheer waste! This perfume could have been sold for well over a year’s wages and handed out to the poor.” They swelled up in anger, nearly bursting with indignation over her.

6-9 But Jesus said, “Let her alone. Why are you giving her a hard time? She has just done something wonderfully significant for me. You will have the poor with you every day for the rest of your lives. Whenever you feel like it, you can do something for them. Not so with me. She did what she could when she could—she pre-anointed my body for burial. And you can be sure that wherever in the whole world the Message is preached, what she just did is going to be talked about admiringly.”

The Ladies from W.A.V.E

The women from W.A.V.E multiply love through one young lady who touches other young hearts.

The following story has many components. I want you to focus on some ladies of action who are changing the world one young person at a time. They are the women from W.A.V.E - "Women Against Violence Everywhere." Some folks talk about stopping violence. These ladies help teach relationship building skills and self esteem development. They help young people form personal foundations that multiply love and servant-hood instead of fear and violence. They are mentioned only briefly. A seed stays briefly under broken dirt and then it grows, Oh! How it grows! Their efforts are causing a ripple effect that will bring a tidal wave of love that washes and restores the broken hearts of young people.

The HOMELESS DUDE Wasn't "HOME"

I took some pizza wrapped in 2 paper plates out to where I thought he was sleeping. I told the young people inside the Youth Center where I was going as I stepped out the side door.

There is a covered area on the side of the church next to the Youth Center. The homeless dude stacked up some mattresses and box springs for walls. The floor is dirt and the wind is frigid as it blows against the cold concrete.

I called into the darkness to see if he was "home." My callings into the shadowy stillness were met only by the sound of the wind. I left the paper plate covered pizza with a napkin on the barred window sill that serves as his night stand.

He usually sleeps on top of one mattress with another pulled over his body for insulation.  He's been "evicted" several times and the Police deliver him to a shelter. I don't know why he keeps coming back.

I was my first night back at the Youth Center after a couple of weeks away in heaven - I got married to a wonderful lady who loves God and her neighbors. The first story I heard was about another fight amongst young ladies. It saddens me to hear about people who take the pain that was heaped on their hearts and they enlarge the pain by inflicting wounds on others.

The young people were hungry and they ate mini tacos and waited for pizza. I told them we had to save a few slices for the homeless dude. After dinner, we opened the gym and we were packed until about 9. One of the highlights of the night was the appearance of the ladies from W.A.V.E. They demonstrated commitment and love in action by coming to the Youth Center for an audience of one. All of the girls were absent except for one. They came for the one.

Imagine what Buffalo would be like if we taught our children how to love their neighbors one neighbor at a time. What if we taught them that each individual is just as important as a group of individuals? In a world where big numbers seem to equal success, the ladies from W.A.V.E. are changing the world one young person at a time - that's a more excellent way.

Thanks for your time. Go do something nice for somebody.

Sex, Rubber Chickens & Spongebobism

Niagara County Community College was filled with high school students today for the Annual Police and Community Relations Seminar. Many speakers on a variety of relevant topics addressed the students through out the day. Suicide, drugs, alcohol, sex and decision making were presented to the students in classroom sessions after the keynote address.

"IT'S GOOD TO SEE YA!" That was the greeting the students received as they entered the classroom where the YWAP Director from Youth With A Purpose was presenting. The name of my presentation was "Good Decision Making." The students were urged to make decisions regarding their future before they faced the actual need for the decision. An example would be: "I am making the decision now to wait to have sex until I am married. When I am faced with the decision of whether or not to have sex because I am being tempted, I am deciding now that I will wait." It's similar to what you would do if your house is on fire. You already have made the decision that you will run if there is a fire.  The same principle of "Forward Decision Making" applies towards sex.

Everything in life starts with brokenness. The weightlifter breaks down muscle to get stronger. The farmer breaks the ground before he plants a seed. A butterfly struggles. A diamond is made from stress and pressure. A pearl is made from an irritant. It takes courage to make a decision to embrace brokenness to gain understanding and wisdom about life. The rubber chicken is a metaphor for someone who lacks the courage to become a "Forward Decision Maker."

The subject of God always comes up during school presentations. Everybody has an opinion and unfortunately many people shut the subject down when students really do want to explore religion and faith issues. I talk about faith freely. I explain to the students that if I were to describe my own faith, I would say that I'm a Jesus freak, God geek and a Holy Spirit fruitcake. I explain that means I go to the highest highs and the deepest depths to explore my own personal relationship with God. I also make sure that they know that it doesn't make any difference to me what their own faith or lack of faith is. I love everybody the same and will respect their beliefs. My canned statement usually sounds something like this: "I don't care if your are a Christian, Muslim or Jew. I don't care if you're into, Buddhism, Hinduism, or spongebobism. We all are worthy of the same respect.

All children are gifted. The students are told repeatedly how special and valuable they are. I use a variety of rap songs, poetry and humor. We have a blast, spread a positive message and they leave feeling esteemed and energized . It was a great day at NCCC.

Thanks for your time. Go do something nice for somebody.

Raunchy Dope, Court, a Flying Chair and Jesus

Some days stretch into nights and and you really have to focus to find the good parts of a hard days night. I'm on auto focus right now as I review some special moments of my day. The end of the day had some episodes that could easily cast a pall on the whole day, Including smelling some real raunchy dope outside our gym. (No, I didn't inhale!)

My morning began with a haircut. It wasn't just any old haircut. It was my last haircut by the talented lady whose been making me look better for quite a few years. She's losing me as a customer to my fiance. I will not begin to talk about my fiance here because you would hear a never ending love story! Let me know if you are looking for a great lady to cut your hair. I left my last haircut with this nice lady and headed to court. Yep, it was trial day once again. I won't comment on the trial as the Judge will give his decision on the case next week. Trials are not fun and most of them appear to be contests devoid of compassion and truth. Even after people lay their hand on a Bible and swear to tell the truth, seldom does the truth seem to appear. The trial took the whole morning. I would much rather be mentoring in the Buffalo Schools than spending time in courtrooms but a mentor is involved in every aspect of a young person's life.

In the afternoon, I visited a Buffalo Councilman's office to pick up a check that would support our youth programs. That is great news. I also visited a friend in the Buffalo School Superintendent's Office. She is a great lady who helps children become believers in their own abilities. She raises those people around her to another level of belief in themselves. We had a short visit and hopefully we can plan more collaborations on behalf of school children in the near future. After a trip to Boy Scout Headquarters and a brief stop at my mechanics garage (let me know if you need a great mechanic!) It was time for the real fun to begin and I headed for the Youth Center.

The first few hours were uneventful. A couple of young ladies who are like daughters to me borrowed the YWAP Van. They were giving a bed to somebody who had never had one before. They were helping somebody and that's cool. I was sitting in the gym when a boy walked in and smiled as he said: "Jesus loves you and so do I." Soon it seemed like the sky started falling. A phone was stolen, a basketball became stuck in the ceiling (we only have one left,) food became a weapon and the smells of the neighborhood started to change. I walked over to the gym and I could smell the raunchiest dope that I ever smelled. The guys inside were playing ball and knew nothing about the smell outside. It could have been somebody just passing by who ducked into the parking lot to catch a quick buzz.

The worst event of the night was a physical altercation between a young guy and a couple of girls. Where I come from, A GUY NEVER HITS A GIRL! I watched a young guy pick up a metal chair and throw it at the young girl. Thank God the chair missed and bounced off the wall behind her. The wall will have to be repaired as the plaster was gouged. I called the Police. That event made for a pretty sour evening.

While waiting for the Police to arrive (they never did,) I chatted with an old friend outside the Youth Center. He just happened to walk by and I haven't seen him in years. I used to take him and his friends and cousins camping. We had some good times and some hard times. Some of his friends went down the wrong path. We both know some people who have been shot and killed. He said he is doing great in school and learning a trade. He said his family members are doing great. He said they found Jesus. That's is the bright spot of my night. He told me that in front of some other young guys who were suspended from school. One of our young guys was growing up and becoming a good role model for some other young guys. Jesus was involved.

Most of the young people who come through the programs at Youth With A Purpose are really good kids who are trying hard to be good in a hard world. It's the few, out of control and usually fatherless children who cause the majority of the trouble. We know that teaching the message of how God the Father loves us unconditionally enough to let His Son die for us is the only answer. It works and we will keep teaching.

Thanks for your time. Go do somethinfg nice for somebody.

The Conviction Switch

There were about 7 of us in the candy aisle stocking shelves on the overnight shift at Target. I was given the opportunity to make some extra money during the busy holiday season. The ministry of Youth With A Purpose was struggling and I needed to pay some bills. I would not take time away from the young people we serve through our various programs so an overnight shift seemed like the perfect time of the day to work. The long hours caused me to lose clarity in my thinking, I'm glad God uses His conviction switch to turn on His current of truth to refresh my clarity when I lose it.

Most of the people on the overnight shift were a lot younger than I was. The pay was only $8.50 an hour and the work was hard. Working overnights can really goof up your sleeping patterns. I would work from 11pm - 7am, sleep a few hours and then visit schools for our Mentoring Program, sleep a few hours and then open our Youth Center from 4pm - 9pm. Sometimes I would be exhausted as I stepped onto the floor to begin the task of replenishing the shelves depleted by the day's sales. I did my best to maintain a positive disposition and be grateful for the opportunity to work. Sometimes I sagged and my thoughts were foggy.

In our Youth Center, we have a saying that goes like this:

"Positive words only are spoken,
negative words make people feel broken."

We do not allow any profanity or curse words or even any negativity. We will ask you to leave for repeated negativity because it is contagious. On my first few days of working overnight, I heard all kinds of language used that we would not allow in our Youth Center. I didn't say anything because I did not have a relationship with these young people and they looked at me as an "over-the-hill outsider." I just tried to smile and say something positive to everyone I met. I asked God to give me wisdom and strength to know more of His purposes for my journey into overnight.

In the candy aisle that night, I was tired. One guy had on a headset with music blaring various expletives including the "F" word. All around me people spoke the same "F" word in almost every sentence. One guy described his dinner that night as: "Man that sh*t was f***ing good as hell." I was shaking my head. Partly in frustration and partly in ignorance, I became slightly tainted by the miry bog of negativity in the candy aisle. I can't remember my exact words but I spoke and the "F" word was in my sentence. Yes, I said the "F" word. It was not in anger or a manner of cursing, it was more of like I was saying: "You guys keep using this word when there is a much more beautiful, kinder and gentler way to talk." But that's not what I said. My communication was my own and not in a manner that reflected God's love.

As soon as the word left my mouth, I felt bad. I felt dirty. I felt tainted. I felt like I had sunk into the negativity of my surroundings. I'm supposed to be light, especially as an older guy. I got dimmed that night in the candy aisle. God used His conviction switch on me. I'm not talking about the switch that's like the cane used to hit people. I'm talking about the switch that turns something on. If I could give words to my thoughts of that night, it would sound like this: "Okay God, I feel like I just blew it. I'm supposed to be light and I became a part of the darkness. I'm sorry, Why am I here? What's Your purpose for me being here?" The conviction switch is located in the pit just below your xiphoid process or the bottom of the middle of your rib cage. It's your gut where you feel in the pit of your stomach. The conviction switch is located in your "soul gut."
God is my electrician who keeps me connected with His Spiritual flow.

The conviction switch in your soul-gut is connected to the voice-mail in your heart. It sends messages to let you know that there is something happening here. As your heart receives the messages about something being amiss, you have the ability to turn on God's satellite dish. He will send you information about the reason your conviction switch has been tripped. Once that connection is made, God will reveal a more excellent way that will turn off your conviction switch.

About 20 minutes after this episode, I was several aisles away from the candy aisle when a co-worker approached me. He said: "God must be trying to tell me something because every aisle I walk down you're here." We had a brief discussion about God and I invited him to have coffee to talk some more.  I saw another girl and said: "It's good to see ya!" She asked me why I always said that and I told her she was special. She replied: "I'm not special" I told her that she was special and that God loved all of us the same and made us all equally special." I sang her a song called "Running" which is a rap song about seeing Jesus in everyone you meet.

Everywhere we go we are called to be light. God covers our butts when we sag. The conviction switch is a switch of opportunity that allows us to have the ability to examine sin in our lives. It is a choice.

The conviction switch is God's mechanism for jolting us
with a charge of His life rejuvenating truth.

Thanks for your time. Go do something nice for somebody

The Cool Jail Perspective Part 1

Our conversations are short, they only last 15 minutes. The cost is exorbitant: $50 per hour. Imagine that, I pay $50 for 4 phone calls that last a total of 60 minutes. He's in jail facing some tough decisions. During one of our conversations he complained that some of his friends; "get to be in a cool jail." I was stunned, what the heck is a cool jail?

A cool jail is a place where you get more privileges, he explained. You can stay up later, leave your TV on all night and make phone calls at later hours. The guards aren't as strict with their rules. It's sad that some young people have had their life vision reduced to a world of cool jails. Most of these young people have done something to land themselves in jail. Society has not done enough to create opportunities for these young people to stay out of jail. Our cities are being emptied of young men as they are being poured into jails across our country. The cool jail is a matter of perspective and is brought about by a style of brain washing.
This young man feels a cool breeze on a mountain top. He is free and doesn't relate to a cool jail.

When someone is first accused of a crime, they generally go through stages similar to the phases of the grieving process:
  1. Denial – This really didn't happen.
  2. Anger – Blaming others (like God), focusing on unfairness, harboring unforgiveness.
  3. Bargaining – offering a deal to God to change the situation.
  4. Depression – resignation, giving up, thinking of suicide literally, emotionally, financially.
  5. Acceptance – Somehow I’ll survive.
A prisoner goes through a heart grieving process:
  1.  Denial: I did not do what they accused me of.
  2.  Anger:  It's not my fault. I live in a bad hood. Nobody cares about me. I had to survive. It's kill or be kill. It's a game. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose.
  3.  Plea Deals:  I'll say what you want me to say to get less time.
  4. Resignation: If I have to do life I wish they would just tell me so I can get on with it.
  5. Acceptance and Grafting: The prisoner begins to act like his surroundings.
It does not matter whether a prisoner is guilty or not, the stages are still the same. Very seldom does somebody admit to a crime and accept full responsibility. Once somebody is in jail and the charges are stacked against them, they become resigned to their fate and their life view begins to shrink. That's the basics of how the Cool Jail Perspective is created.

The Cool Jail Perspective can begin at birth. If you are born into a family with a history of criminal behavior and prison time, you already have a strike against you. Acceptance of a life that includes jail time is normal. Acceptance of a life that includes illegal activity is normal. If society does not create enough opportunities to counter the acceptance of illegal activity, you end up with a city in poverty that sends many young people to jail.
These young men will sleep in a cool tent. We believe that teaching wilderness survival skills will teach them how to stay out of cool jails.

Part 2 of the Cool Jail Perspective will deal with the foundational structure of the Cool Jail. It does not begin behind bars, the jail cell is constructed in the homes and neighborhoods of America.

Thanks for your time. Go do something nice for somebody.
